Ultravac BEF Vaccine®
Description
- A live attenuated viral vaccine in freeze dried suspension. The BEF strain 919 was modified by passage in cell culture and grown in heterologous tissue.
Recommendations for Use
- Vaccination of cattle against ephemeral fever. It has been used safely in cattle in early pregnancy.
The Zoetis Advantage
- Vaccination and challenge trials have demonstrated efficacy in healthy cattle.
- When used with the special BEF diluent the vaccine provides an effective immunity against BEF virus infection.
- The diluent inactivates the live attenuated virus and acts as the adjuvant.
- Antibody titres remain high for at least 1 year.
Dosage and Administration
Dose Rate
• 2 mL dose by subcutaneous injection.
USE ALL RECONSTITUTED PRODUCT IMMEDIATELY.
Primary vaccination: Cattle require an initial 2 ml dose subcutaneously. The second 2 ml subcutaneous dose can be effectively administered any time from 2 weeks up to 6 months later.
Cattle can be vaccinated from 6 months of age. Two doses of vaccine are required to produce long lasting immunity.
Booster vaccination: 2 ml annual booster dose is required for all cattle.
Additional Information
- Equipment, syringes, needles used for vaccination must be clean, sterile and free of chemicals.
- After use, dismantle and wash in disinfectant such as household bleach (20ml in 500 ml water) then rinse in cold water.

Disposal
- Discarded vials/containers should immediately be placed in a designated and appropriately labelled 'biologicals' container. If this option is not available, bury the vial/container below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and roots.
Storage recommendations
- Ultravac BEF Vaccine must be stored between 2°C and 8°C (Refrigerate. Do Not Freeze). Protect from light.
Registered Label Warnings
Side effects
Following vaccination with this product, a transient febrile response in animals may be observed. This response could contribute to a sudden drop in milk production by affected dairy cattle.
Safe Use Recommendations
- Take care to avoid accidental self-injection
- Accidental self-administration may result in local bruising, pain and swelling. In the event-of self-administration, seek medical attention and show the package leaflet or the label, to the Medical Practitioner.
