Orbenin® Enduro
Description
- Orbenin Enduro Dry Cow Intramammary Suspension is a stable suspension containing 600 mg per syringe of cloxacillin as the benzathine salt in a long acting base.
- It is presented in syringes for intramammary infusion and is designed to be used in the dairy cow at the point of drying off, immediately after the last milking of the lactation.
- The combined effects of the relatively insoluble benzathine salt and the long acting base give an extended period of activity for 7-8 weeks in the dry cow.
Recommendations for use
- For the control of mastitis in dairy cows caused by Streptococcus spp, Staphylococcus spp.(including penicillin resistant strains), Corynebacterium spp. and other organisms susceptible to cloxacillin.Mastitis due to streptococci is still common but Staphylococcus spp, many strains of which are penicillin resistant, now account for a large proportion of cases. The extent of sub-clinical and latent infection in a herd is frequently unsuspected. Half the herd may well be affected, although a much smaller number show clinical signs at any one time. In untreated herds a significant build up of subclinical infection can occur during the dry period, so that after a number of lactations the incidence of infection becomes serious. The influence of sub-clinical infection on milk yield, the risk of cross-infection and the chance of sub-clinical infection flaring up, make it necessary to treat the matter as a herd problem.
- Cows maybe selected at dry off to receive Orbenin Enduro, or, if advised by a veterinarian a blanket of whole herd treatment may be warranted. When the cow is milked out for the last time the teat is sterilised and one syringe of Orbenin Enduro Dry Cow Intramammary Suspension is infused into each quarter and allowed to remain. It is desirable to use an antiseptic teat dip and other routine hygienic measures at milking to help maintain the control of infection in the herd.
While cases of mastitis, if they arise during lactation, will still require treatment with an appropriate antibiotic such as Orbenin® LA, the use of the routine dry cow medication has been shown to achieve very valuable control of herd infection at calving. Since the treatment is during the dry period it does not lead to loss from discarded milk.
The Zoetis Advantage
Orbenin Enduro provides:
- World leading cure rates for both Staph. aureus and Strep. uberis infections
- Unsurpassed protection against new infections from both Strep. uberis and Staph. aureus throughout the dry period
- Unique patent protected ‘dynomilled’ formulation for greater udder penetration and superior cure rates
- An extended period of activity (7-8 weeks)
- No antibiotic resistance despite many years of use
- The confidence to prescribe as first choice treatment.
Dosage
At the end of lactation milk the cow out normally. Clean and disinfect the teat, infuse one syringe of Orbenin Enduro into each quarter. It is normally unnecessary and undesirable to introduce any further antibiotic treatment during the dry period. The cow will be milked as usual when she calves down.
