Cattleguard® Pour-On For cattle and red deer
Description
- Cattleguard Pour-On endectocide is a ready to use, clear solution containing 5g/L moxidectin.
- Cattleguard pour-on for cattle and red deer is an endectocide with efficacy in treating and controlling moxidectin-sensitive internal and external parasites in cattle and lungworm, and roundworms in red deer. Moxidectin is a second generation macrocyclic lactone endectocide.
Recommendations for Use
- For the treatment and control of moxidectin sensitive internal and external parasites of cattle and for the treatment and control of lungworm and gastrointestinal roundworms of red deer.
Spectrum of Activity
CATTLE
CATTLEGUARD® POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER, a member of the macrocyclic lactone family of chemicals, is effective in the treatment and control of the following parasites affecting cattle:
Gastrointestinal (adult and larval (L4) nematodes)
- Haemonchus placei
- Ostertagia ostertagi ( 0. lyrata) small brown stomach worm including inhibited larvae)
- Trichostrongylus axei (stomach hair worm)
- Trichostrongylus colubriformis (black scour worm)

- Cooperia oncophora (C. surnabada/C. mcmasteri) (small intestinal worm)
- Cooperia pectinata

In cattle, following a single application at the recommended dose rate, CATTLEGUARD® POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER prevents re-infection with the following parasite species:

CATTLEGUARD® is effective for treatment and control of cattle tick on cattle, including strains resistant to organophosphates, synthetic pyrethroids and amidines.
The persistent activity of CATTLEGUARD® prevents the development of viable cattle tick (Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus) for 21 days after treatment. For strategic programs treatment at 21 day intervals is recommended.
Some engorged females continue to drop for up to three days after the first treatment, and these may lay some viable eggs. This should be taken into account when planning a strategic dipping program.
Buffalo Fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) ControlThe persistent activity of CATTLEGUARD® POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER can be used as an aid in the control of buffalo fly (Haematobia irritans exigua) for up to 14 days after treatment.

In addition, CATTLEGUARD® POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER can be used to treat and control the following parasites of red deer.

Broad Spectrum
- CattleGuard Pour-On for Cattle and Red Deer is efficacious against roundworms, lungworm, cattle tick, lice and mites which infect cattle, and lungworm and roundworms of red deer.
Effect on Dung Beetles
- When applied as directed, the levels of CattleGuard Pour-On for Cattle and Red Deer in the faeces of treated cattle are not likely to have any significant adverse effect on the following dung beetles: Onthophagus gazella, O. taurus. Euoniticellus intermedius and E.fulvus.
- Effects on other dungbeetle species have not been fully evaluated.
Dosage
Dose Rate
CATTLEGUARD® POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER comes ready to use as a clear solution containing 5 g/L moxidectin. When given at a dose volume of 1ml/10kg liveweight, CATTLEGUARD® delivers the recommended dosage of 0.5mg moxidectin/kg liveweight. CATTLEGUARD® does not cause irritation to the skin or hide damage when used as directed.
Cattle and Red Deer
CATTLEGUARD POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER should be applied along the top of the back from the withers to the base of the tail. Do not retreat deer within 60 days. Volume to use is 1 ml per 10 kg liveweight. This will administer the correct dose of 0.5mg/ kg liveweight.
CATTEGUARD can be used in lactating dairy cattle, but DO NOT TREAT LACTATING CATTLE AT LESS THAN 21 DAY INTERVALS. The following table may be used as a guide for the dose volume to use.
Cattle in excess of 650 kg should be dosed at 1 ml per 10 kg liveweight. A representative sample of animals should be weighed before treatment either with scales or a weighband. Dose rate should be based on the heaviest animal in each group (bulls, cows, steers, calves, etc.).
Do not under dose. Check accuracy of dose delivery of applicator regularly. Where there is a large variation in size within the group, draft into two or more lines based on bodyweight, to avoid excessive overdosing.
Rainfast
The efficacy of CATTLEGUARD POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER is not adversely affected if applied when the hide is wet, or if rain occurs shortly after application.
However the efficacy against tick and buffalo fly may be reduced if very heavy rain occurs following treatment. Treatment of animals under these circumstances is not good agricultural practice.
Weatherproof
The efficacy of CATTLEGUARD POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER is not adversely affected if applied to cattle under extreme seasonal conditions such as very high UV-light and temperatures in summer and very low temperatures in winter.
Non-Irritant
CATTLEGUARD POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER does not cause irritation to the skin or hide damage when used as directed.
Ease of Use
CATTLEGUARD POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER comes ready to use. A number of applicators have been tested with CATTLEGUARD and several have proved suitable, including the Phillips 45ml applicator.

Safety to Target Animals
CATTLEGUARD POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER has a wide margin of safety when used at the recommended dose rate in all ages and breeds of cattle including pregnant cows and breeding bulls.
Concurrent Use
CATTLEGUARD POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER is safe to use concurrently with other treatments in cattle including mineral supplements, fluke treatments and vaccines.
Do not apply at the same time as any other pour-on product.
Effect on Dung Beetles
When applied as directed, the levels of CATTLEGUARD MOXIDECTIN 5g/L POUR-ON FOR CATTLE AND RED DEER in the faeces of treated cattle are not likely to have any significant adverse effect on the following dung beetles: Onthophagus gazella, O. taurus.

Parasite Control Programs
Effective parasite control for maximum productivity is an essential part of farm management. Follow recommended parasite management practices to reduce the potential for resistance to develop.

Disposal
This container can be recycled if it is clean, dry, free of visible residues and has the drum MUSTER logo visible. Triple or pressure rinse container for disposal. Dispose of rinsate or any undiluted chemical according to state legislative requirements. Wash outside of the container and the cap. Store cleaned container in a sheltered place with cap removed. It will then be acceptable for recycling at any drumMuster collection or similar container management program site. The cap should not be replaced but may be taken separately.
If recycling is not available, dispose of containers at a local authority landfill. If neither of these options are available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set out for this purpose, clear of waterways, vegetation and roots. Empty containers and product should not be burnt.
